The second, <em>Pon De Replay: Gender, Sexuality, and DJ Cultures<\/em>, is a manifesto on black feminist praxis, technology, and nightclub culture.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rebeccasimonecarroll.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Rebecca Carroll<\/strong><\/a>, Host and Editor of Special Projects at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wnyc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WNYC Radio<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York City<\/a> has a forthcoming book, <em>Surviving the White Gaze: A Memoir<\/em> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Simon &amp; Schuster<\/a> (2020).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sociology.sas.upenn.edu\/c_charles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Camille Z. Charles<\/strong><\/a> is working on a book exploring the intra-racial diversity among black Americans who identify either as African American, mixed-race\/biracial, or black immigrant, tentatively titled <em>The New Black: Race-Conscious or Post-Racial?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sueshon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Sue Shon<\/strong><\/a> is currently working on a monograph, <em>Visual Literacy and the Making of Racial Sense<\/em>, which tells the story of how race acquired a visual feel through the aesthetic structuring of the modern visual experience.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tnflorvil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Tiffany N. Florvil<\/strong><\/a> is currently revising her manuscript tentatively entitled, Making a <em>Movement: A History of Black Germans, Gender, and Belonging<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorksj.ac.uk\/schools\/humanities-religion--philosophy\/staff-profiles\/english-literature\/dr-janine-bradbury\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Janine Bradbury&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a> first book, <em>African American Women and Passing<\/em>, will be published by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.palgrave.com\/us\/humanities\/literature\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Palgrave Macmillan<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/art.ua.edu\/profile\/wendy-castenell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Wendy Castenell&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a> current project is a manuscript based on her dissertation entitled \u201cColor Outside the Line: Liminality and Creole Identity in Louisiana, Colonial Era to Reconstruction,\u201d which focuses on the forcible construction of racial and caste identities in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louisiana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Louisiana<\/a>. Using painted portraits of members of the community of free people of color, she argues that race in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Louisiana was ambiguous and flexible. There was a constant tension between public and private status, allowing people to move between and amongst castes.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/history.uchicago.edu\/directory\/guy-emerson-mount\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guy Emerson Mount<\/a><\/strong> has a forthcoming chapter titled \u201cCreating the Black Family: Frederick Douglass, Helen Pitts, and the Sexual Politics of Interracial Marriage\u201d in <em>New Perspectives on the Black Intellectual Tradition<\/em>, (2018)\u00a0edited by Christopher Cameron, Ashley Farmer, and Keisha Blain from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nupress.northwestern.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Northwestern University Press<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.calstatela.edu\/academic\/english\/lauren-heintz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Lauren Heintz<\/strong><\/a> is currently at work on her manuscript, titled, <em>Hidden In Plain View: Where Interracial Meets Queer in Nineteenth-Century U.S. Literature and Culture<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/spanport.wisc.edu\/2018\/03\/23\/professor-victor-goldgel-carballo-named-a-burkhardt-fellow-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Victor Goldgel Carballo&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a> second scholarly monograph will be a study of \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=5864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">passing<\/a>\u2019 as an open secret in nineteenth-century <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cuba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cuba<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=5864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Racial passing<\/a> is generally understood as a divergence between the private and the public identities of a given subject, and I argue that the Cuban case reveals the need for an alternative analytical model: one that allows us to conceptualize those cases in which this divergence is disregarded or disavowed, and in which the \u201cfake\u201d identity is implicitly validated. The book therefore focuses on a kind of passing that did not depend on racial secrets so much as open secrets, and investigates the active forms of not-knowing \u2014ranging from tactful silence and reserve to hypocrisy and disavowal\u2014 at the core of the construction of identities.<\/li>\n<li>In a new line of work, <a href=\"https:\/\/college.lclark.edu\/live\/profiles\/91-diana-leonard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Diana J. Leonard<\/strong><\/a> has begun exploring moral judgments of racial passing behavior. That is, when people \u201ctransgress\u201d boundaries of racial categorization, how do we as perceivers judge and, in some cases, denigrate these social actors and their behaviors?<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.utm.edu\/departments\/english\/bios\/hill.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Melvin Hill<\/a><\/strong> is currently developing an edited collection tentatively entitled, <em>Critical Essays on Danzy Senna<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Elizabeth Webb<\/strong> is an artist and filmmaker currently living and working in Los Angeles. Her work is invested in issues surrounding race and identity, often using the lens of her own family history of migration and racial passing to explore larger, systemic constructs. She is currently working on a hybrid documentary film that traces the production and construction of racial identities within a family (her own) where members operate on both sides of the \u201ccolor line.\u201d Elizabeth holds a BA from the University of Virginia and is completing a dual MFA in Film\/Video and Photography\/Media at California Institute of the Arts.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.concordia.ca\/faculty\/lorna-roth.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Lorna Roth&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a> current book project, <em>Colour Balance: Race, Technologies, and \u201cIntelligent Design\u201d<\/em>, is a book in which she examines the ways in which skin colour has been imagined, embedded and colour-shifted over time in products and technologies.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flinders.edu.au\/people\/christine.winter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Christine Winter&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a> current project is titled, <em>German Mixed-Race Diasporas in Southern Hemisphere Mandated Territories: Scientific theories, politics and identity transformation<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.brigfield.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brigitte Fielder&#8217;s<\/a><\/strong> current project is titled &#8220;Kinfullness: White Womanhood and Interracial Kinship in Nineteenth-Century American Literatures.&#8221; It explores exposing how the national\/cultural trope of the white woman is constructed through positioning against white and non-white kin, Kinfullness shows how literary narratives of white women&#8217;s interracial kinship relations work to shape discourses of domesticity, heterosexuality, nationalism, abolitionism, and racial uplift, shifting the expectations of white women&#8217;s kinship towards a model of womanhood able to incorporate structures of national multiracial family.<\/li>\n<li>Assistant Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/gender.stanford.edu\/people\/lauren-davenport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Lauren Davenport&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a> current book project, <em>Politics Between Black and White<\/em>, assesses how social, historical, and economic processes help construct multiracials&#8217; identities and political outlook. Her other ongoing research projects examine the gendered nature of racial labeling, public attitudes towards interracial marriage, the policy ramifications of multiple-race identification, and the influence of coethnicity on voter support for political candidates.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.afam.northwestern.edu\/people\/nitasha-tamar-sharma.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Nitasha Tamar Sharma&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">second book, <i>Hawai\u2018i is my Haven: Race and Indigeneity in the Black Pacific<\/i> is under contract with Duke University Press. This ethnography is based on interviews with 60 non-White mixed race Blacks in Hawai&#8217;i, including Black Hawaiians, Black Samoans, and Black Okinawans to analyze how mixed race people negotiate, express, and repress race as they identify across constructed racial categories. This work speaks to debates in Mixed Race Studies, Comparative Race Studies, and Diaspora Studies to analyze Blackness in the Pacific and offer new theories of belonging that emerge from the intersection of race and indigeneity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"mailto:awegma1@tigers.lsu.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrew N. Wegmann<\/a><\/strong> (Ph.D. Candidate at Louisiana State University) is working on a dissertation that tracks the racial history of the New Orleans Creoles of Color. Focused on the evolution of Creole racial identity and social status before the Civil War, the work looks at how developments in racial science, taxonomy, and language influenced Creole conceptions of racial and social belonging in New Orleans and the United States.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.upenn.edu\/cf\/faculty\/roberts1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dorothy E. Roberts<\/a><\/strong> is working on a research project examining her father\u2019s (<a href=\"http:\/\/articles.chicagotribune.com\/2002-01-23\/news\/0201230382_1_interracial-anthropology-mr-roberts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert E. T. Roberts<\/a>) 500+ interviews of interracial couples and their children in Chicago\u00a0from 1937 into the 1980s. Robert Roberts, a professor of anthropology and sociology <a href=\"http:\/\/www.roosevelt.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roosevelt University<\/a>\u00a0in downtown Chicago for the majority of his career, wrote numerous academic articles on interracial marriage.<\/li>\n<li>Poets\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/117891089444282091687\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Monica McClure<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.brendashaughnessy.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brenda Shaughnessy<\/a><\/strong> are editing an anthology titled,<em> Both and Neither: Biracial Writers in America<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/tulane.edu\/liberal-arts\/art\/ppl-mia-bagneris.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mia Bagneris<\/a><\/strong>, (Assistant Professor of\u00a0History of Art at Tulane University) is particularly interested in the place of images in the history of slavery, colonialism, empire, and the construction of national identities and in images of interracial contact and the mixed-race body. Her current project, <em>Coloring the Caribbean: Agostino Brunias and the Painting of Race in the British West Indies, c. 1765-1800<\/em>, challenges conventional designations of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lennoxhonychurch.com\/brunias.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brunias\u2019s<\/a> paintings as uncomplicated plantocratic propaganda that functioned as visual \u201cfield guides\u201d for reading racial identity and social status, examining instead how the artist\u2019s images reflected and refracted ideas about race commonly held by Britons in the colonial Caribbean during the late eighteenth century.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bowdoin.edu\/faculty\/g\/gmfoster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guy Foster&#8217;s<\/a><\/strong> current book project is titled \u201cWaking Up with the Enemy: Postwar African American Literature and the Ethics of Interracial Intimacy.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/faculty.arts.ubc.ca\/mchapman\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mary Chapman&#8217;s<\/a><\/strong> latest book project <em>\u201cSui Sin Far\u201d in Canada: The Uncollected Canadian Writings of Edith Eaton<\/em> (under contract, <a href=\"http:\/\/mqup.mcgill.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">McGill-Queen\u2019s University Press<\/a>) will more than quadruple the existing <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sui_Sin_Far\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eaton<\/a> corpus and expand scholarly awareness of her Canadian and American publications.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/faculty.ithaca.edu\/dadams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Derek Adams<\/a><\/strong> of Ithaca College is currently working on a project that examines unconventional performances of racial normativity in African American and American literature. The project explores some of the more subtle connections between the American canon of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=5864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">racial passing<\/a> literature and the current social climate of &#8220;racelessness&#8221; in the United States.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiana.edu\/~amst\/faculty\/snyder.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Christina Synder<\/a><\/strong> is currently at work on a book-length work called <em>The Indian Gentlemen of Choctaw Academy: Status and Sovereignty in Antebellum America<\/em>. <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.library.okstate.edu\/Chronicles\/v028\/v028p052.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Choctaw Academy<\/a>, operating from 1825 to 1848, was the first multitribal boarding school in the United States, and it was run by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richard_Mentor_Johnson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Richard Mentor Johnson<\/a> (vice president under <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martin_Van_Buren\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Van Buren<\/a>) and Johnson&#8217;s mixed-race family. Although initiated by the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Choctaw_Nation_of_Oklahoma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Choctaw Nation<\/a>, the Academy became home to a diverse range of Native peoples from the Southeast and Midwest, including <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muscogee_(Creek)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Creeks<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cherokee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cherokees<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chickasaw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chickasaws<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seminole\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Seminoles<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Potawatomi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Potawatomis<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Miami_people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Miamis<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Osage_Nation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Osages<\/a>. Although extraordinary in many respects, Choctaw Academy illuminates wider patterns in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/History_of_the_United_States_(1789%E2%80%931849)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American antebellum history<\/a>; this place has much to teach us about the gap between racial ideology and everyday practice, as well as cross-cultural ideas about class and status, and Indian notions of sovereignty during the crucial <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indian_removal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Removal era<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"mailto:HSTEELE@CLEMSON.EDU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Helen Diamond Steele, Ph.D.<\/a><\/strong> [Clemson University] candidate in Educational Leadership Higher Education, has been awarded the Research Incentive Grant by the Southern Association for College Student Affairs (SACSA) for her dissertation study entitled, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=35244\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Racial Identity Development of Mixed-Race College Students<\/a>.\u201d The purpose of the study is to identify the factors that influence mixed-race college students&#8217; choice of racial identity.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/wagner.edu\/history\/faculty-staff\/reynolds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rita Reynolds<\/a><\/strong> is presently working on a book on wealthy free women of color in antebellum <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charleston,_South_Carolina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charleston, South Carolina<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/sacs\/staff\/profile\/daniel.mcneil\">Daniel R.\u00a0McNeil<\/a><\/strong> is currently completing a book entitled <em>Honest Men: Black Radicals, White Liberals and a Neoliberal Revolution<\/em>, which examines the spectral effect of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frantz_Fanon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frantz Fanon<\/a> on two cohorts of intellectuals in Britain, Canada and the United States.\u00a0He is\u00a0also working on a number of projects relating to representations of slavery, racial liberalism and \u2018mixed-race\u2019 metaphors.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ligi.ubc.ca\/?p2=\/modules\/liu\/scholars\/profile.jsp&amp;id=39\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marie-Eve Carrier-Moisan<\/a><\/strong> is currently completing her PhD dissertation (University of British Columbia): an ethnography of global sex tourism in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ponta_Negra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ponta Negra<\/a>, a tourist area in the coastal city of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Natal,_Rio_Grande_do_Norte\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Natal, Brazil<\/a>. She is working to develop a strengths-based, culturally-relevant, affinity group framework to enhance academic performance, psychosocial engagement, and racial identity development among adolescent girls of color. Before Susan began her doctoral work, she earned a master\u00eas degree in Human Development and Psychology from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
