My name is Claire Anne (\u201cDaanee\u201d) Touchstone, and I am a doctoral student at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lmu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Loyola Marymount University<\/a>, writing a dissertation on the effects of racial <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Microaggression\" target=\"_blank\">microaggressions<\/a> on multiracial black-white university students between the ages of 18-25. While I am most interested in people of black-white mixed backgrounds, I will gladly accept any applicant who is of mixed black background.<\/p>\n<p>Racial microaggressions are defined by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tc.edu\/faculty\/index.htm?facid=dw2020\" target=\"_blank\">Derald Wing Sue<\/a> and colleagues (2007) as: \u201cbrief, everyday exchanges that send denigrating messages to people of color because they belong to a racial minority group.\u201d Some examples include (Sue et al, 2007):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Alien in Own Land: When assumed to be foreign-born based on race: \u201cWhere are you from?\u201d \u201cWhere were you born?\u201d \u201cYou speak good English.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Ascription of Intelligence: \u201cYou are a credit to your race.\u201d \u201cYou are so articulate.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Color Blindness: Statements that indicate that a person does not want to acknowledge race: \u201cWhen I look at you, I don\u2019t see color.\u201d \u201cThere is only one race, the human race.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Assumption of Criminal Status: A person of color is presumed to be dangerous, criminal, or deviant on the basis of their race: For example, a man or woman clutching their purse or checking their wallet as a person of color approaches or passes. Also, a store owner following a customer of color around the store.<\/li>\n<li>Denial of Individual Racism: A statement made when people deny their racial biases: \u201cI\u2019m not racist. I have several Black friends.\u201d \u201cAs a woman, I know what you go through as a racial minority.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Can you think of a microaggression that has happened to you in your life, particularly as a result of being of mixed racial backgrounds?<\/p>\n<p>For this study, I am particularly interested in multiracial microaggressions, defined by <a href=\"mailtp:marcjohnst@ucla.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Johnston<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/kevinnadal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nadal<\/a> (2010) as \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=8565\" target=\"_blank\">daily verbal, behavioral, or environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, enacted by monoracial person that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative slights toward multiracial individuals or groups.<\/a>\u201d Some examples include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cWhat are you?<\/li>\n<li>\u201cYou have to choose, you can\u2019t be both.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cOne day, everybody will be mixed.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWere you adopted? Is that your mother, father?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Being accused of \u201cacting white\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Forms that allow only one racial choice<\/li>\n<li>Tokenism: being the racial spokesperson for your minority race: \u201cWhy do all black people ______ (fill in the blank)?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Subjected to minority stereotypes and microaggressions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Study Procedures:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This three-part study consists of reading a vignette of a microaggressive experience and discussing in a focus group interview (of 6-8 people), three individualized interviews (each to take place 3-7 days apart), and writing a short narrative\/reflection (1-2 pages) of a personal microaggressive experience based on being of mixed backgrounds.<\/p>\n<p>Participation is voluntary and anonymous, and participants may withdraw at any time from the study without penalty. All participants will be given an Informed Consent Form and Subject&#8217;s Bill of Rights. All participants will be compensated with a gift card to either Starbuck\u2019s or Target; the amount of the gift card will vary depending on partial or complete participation (up to $25.00 USD), but all participants will receive some compensation for their time.<\/p>\n<p>If you are a person of African-American mixed heritage (particularly with one African-American parent and one Caucasian parent) and are interested in participating in this study, please contact me at <em><a href=\"mailto:daancer@hotmail.com?subject=MixedRaceStudies.org\" target=\"_blank\">daancer@hotmail.com<\/a><\/em>.
