{"id":10578,"date":"2010-12-07T05:19:51","date_gmt":"2010-12-07T05:19:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=10578"},"modified":"2017-03-30T12:41:21","modified_gmt":"2017-03-30T12:41:21","slug":"bob-marley-blacked-up-to-blend-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=10578","title":{"rendered":"Bob Marley &#8216;blacked up&#8217; to blend in"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/people\/news\/bob-marley-blacked-up-to-blend-in-2151047.html\" target=\"_blank\">Bob Marley &#8216;blacked up&#8217; to blend in<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\">The Independent<br \/>\n<\/a>2010-12-04<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rob Sharp<\/strong>, Arts Correspondent<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reggae\" target=\"_blank\">Reggae<\/a> superstar <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bob_Marley\" target=\"_blank\">Bob Marley<\/a> suffered due to his mixed-race background<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Bob Marley preached inner peace and serenity to the masses, but was so racked by angst over his race that he used shoe polish to blacken his hair, according to a new book.<\/p>\n<p>Such insecurities, during Marley&#8217;s teenage years in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kingston,_Jamaica\" target=\"_blank\">Kingston, Jamaica<\/a>, contrast strongly with the reggae superstar\u2019s image around the world.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Marley\u2019s widow, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rita_Marley\" target=\"_blank\">Rita<\/a>, is quoted in the book\u2014entitled <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colingrant.info\/#\/i-and-i-natural-mystics\/4532005691\" target=\"_blank\">I and I: The Natural Mystics: Marley, Tosh and Wailer<\/a><\/em>\u2014as saying that her husband was so racially sensitised and aware of bullying for having a fairer complexion that he asked her to \u201crub shoe polish in his hair to make it more black; make it more African.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The author, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.colingrant.info\/\" target=\"_blank\">Colin Grant<\/a>, has interviewed members of Marley&#8217;s inner circle for the book, released in January [2011].
