Have they \u2018failed\u2019 in some way? This was the accusation made against the journalist and writer <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anatole_Broyard\" target=\"_blank\">Anatole Broyard<\/a>, (1920-1990). But in our celebration of the therapeutic work done by life writing, do we do a disservice to those who make a rational decision to refuse that therapy? In <em>The Haunting of Sylvia Plath<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jacqueline_Rose\" target=\"_blank\">Jacqueline Rose<\/a> writes about the demands of \u2018the biographical imperative\u2019: \u2018Are we meant to be sleuths, piecing together fragment on fragment until the picture is spread before us?
