However, this increase is not based on more opportunity for multiracial students, a new categorization system for race or any other preconceived ideas alone.<\/p>\n<p>Multiracial and multiethnic movements are not a new phenomenon, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sociology.vt.edu\/people\/Reed.html\" target=\"_blank\">Wornie Reed<\/a>, director of the center for race and social policy research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has been going on for some time,\u201d Reed said, adding that multiracial movements have been occurring for the past three decades.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Reed said the moments were part of a new social context \u201cthat race is not a biological construct, but a social construct \u2014 but it doesn\u2019t make it any less real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mps.vt.edu\/raywilliams.html\" target=\"_blank\">Ray Williams<\/a>, director of Tech\u2019s multicultural programs and services, the increase of students identifying themselves as multiracial or multiethnic has been influenced by the post-<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/African-American_Civil_Rights_Movement_(1955%E2%80%931968)\" target=\"_blank\">Civil Rights movement era<\/a> that encapsulates our society.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are more comfortable coming out and saying that they are either one thing or another, or a mix,\u201d Williams said&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.collegiatetimes.com\/stories\/16783\/more-students-identifying-as-multiracial\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More students identifying as multiracial Collegiate Times Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) 2011-02-17 Sarah Watson, News Reporter More students pursuing a secondary education identify themselves as multiracial or multiethnic.
