While previous stories of &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=5864\" target=\"_blank\">passing<\/a>&#8221; have focused on individuals&#8217; struggles to redefine themselves, Sharfstein&#8217;s subjects managed to defy the legal definitions of race within their own communities.
