Smits<\/strong>, Professor of History<br \/>\n<em>The College of New Jersey<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Students of Amerindian-white relations have long ascribed to the English colonists an aversion to race mixing, especially through intermarriage, with the North American natives. To be sure, it is recognized that there was some Indian-white interbreeding, and even marriage, on all Anglo-American frontiers, but proportionately less than in Franco- and Hispanic-America. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colony_of_Virginia\" target=\"_blank\">Virginia&#8217;s<\/a> well-known marriage of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Rolfe\" target=\"_blank\">John Rolfe<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pocahontas\" target=\"_blank\">Pocahontas<\/a> did not establish a widely imitated precedent for Anglo-Indian matrimony in the colony.
