Edwards<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Hofstra University<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This performance explores the influences of the 1859 play <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Octoroon\" target=\"_blank\">The Octoroon<\/a><\/em> by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dion_Boucicault\" target=\"_blank\">Dion Boucicault<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=450\" target=\"_blank\">miscegenation<\/a> laws, and the U.S. Census on biracial identity.\u00a0 All these factors are used in the analysis of the racial identity of [&#8220;Pinky&#8221;] <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org\/civilwar\/cwdoc013.html\" target=\"_blank\">Sally Maria Diggs<\/a>, a 9-year-old girl whose freedom was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org\/civilwar\/cw014_2x.html\" target=\"_blank\">purchased by the congregation<\/a> [for $900 USD on 1860-02-05] of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plymouth_Church\" target=\"_blank\">Plymouth Church, Brooklyn<\/a>, through the efforts of the Reverend <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henry_Ward_Beecher\" target=\"_blank\">Henry Ward Beecher<\/a> and his associates. \u00a0The performance is intended to educate and present the theories of social impact on racial identity while providing historical fact and content.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org\/civilwar\/cwdoc013.html#\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org\/civilwar\/images\/2x\/cw013_2x.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8220;Freedom Ring&#8221; by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eastman_Johnson\" target=\"_blank\">Eastman Johnson<\/a>, from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brooklyn_Daily_Eagle\" target=\"_blank\">Brooklyn Daily Eagle<\/a>, 1934-03-21, p. 1<br \/>\nCourtesy of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org\" target=\"_blank\">Brooklyn Public Library<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>5 Shades of Pink: A Coerced Identity In cooperation with The Graduate Association of Rhetoric and Performance Studies.
