Am I Straight or Gay? CONTROVERSY?\u201d\u00a0 Since its founding, and long before recording artist <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prince_(musician)\" target=\"_blank\">Prince<\/a> penned these lyrics in the 1980s, America has been a space and a place demanding and mandating polarized definitions of race and sexuality. This course will examine the reasoning behind and ramifications of these dichotomies from the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colonial_history_of_the_United_States\" target=\"_blank\">Colonial Period<\/a> to the present in genres that include literature, film, and music.\u00a0 We will also explore how these binaries affect people who identify as biracial and bisexual.<\/p>\n<p>This discussion-based course requires intensive reading, viewing, and listening and will foster your critical thinking and analytical writing.\u00a0 Topics of discussion will include the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=3208\" target=\"_blank\">one-drop rule<\/a>,\u201d the slavery debate, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=450\">miscegenation<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=5864\" target=\"_blank\">racial passing<\/a>, segregation, integration, interracial desire, and sexual passing.\u00a0 Special attention will be given to individuals who and organizations that refuse to follow racial and sexual dictates. Authors will include <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Jefferson\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas Jefferson<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harriet_Jacobs\" target=\"_blank\">Harriet Jacobs<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mark_Twain\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Twain<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nella_Larsen\" target=\"_blank\">Nella Larsen<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Weldon_Johnson\" target=\"_blank\">James Weldon Johnson<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ralph_Ellison\" target=\"_blank\">Ralph Ellison<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/June_Jordan\" target=\"_blank\">June Jordan<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Baldwin\" target=\"_blank\">James Baldwin<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Audre_Lorde\" target=\"_blank\">Audre Lorde<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stevie_Wonder\" target=\"_blank\">Stevie Wonder<\/a>, Prince, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adrienne_Rich\" target=\"_blank\">Adrienne Rich<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/E._Lynn_Harris\" target=\"_blank\">E.
