Africa polls<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.citizen.co.za\/citizen\/content\/en\/citizen\/home\" target=\"_blank\">The Citizen<\/a><br \/>\n2011-05-16<\/p>\n<p><strong>Justine Gerardy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Fruit seller Amien Cox will put his hopes on a white woman in South Africa&#8217;s local polls on Wednesday, 17 years after the fall of the racist apartheid regime that denied an all-race vote.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cape_Town\" target=\"_blank\">CAPE TOWN<\/a> &#8211; Fruit seller Amien Cox will put his hopes on a white woman in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_Africa\" target=\"_blank\">South Africa&#8217;s<\/a> local polls on Wednesday, 17 years after the fall of the racist <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_Africa_under_apartheid\" target=\"_blank\">apartheid<\/a> regime that denied an all-race vote.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No other option: DA,&#8221; said the mixed race supporter of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Democratic_Alliance_(South_Africa)\" target=\"_blank\">Democratic Alliance<\/a> over the ruling <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/African_National_Congress\" target=\"_blank\">African National Congress<\/a> (ANC) that led South Africa into democracy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ll never vote any ANC, never. I&#8217;ll never vote for a black man, never,&#8221; said Cox, 72. &#8220;They don&#8217;t worry for us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Politicians have scrambled to woo mixed race voters, known locally as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=9281\" target=\"_blank\">coloureds<\/a>, who are the majority in Cape Town, South Africa&#8217;s only major city not in ruling party hands.<\/p>\n<p>The battle is a two-party race between President <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jacob_Zuma\" target=\"_blank\">Jacob Zuma&#8217;s<\/a> ANC, which lost the city five years ago, and the DA led by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Helen_Zille\" target=\"_blank\">Helen Zille<\/a>, who is the first female leader of the party.<\/p>\n<p>The coloured group is tipped to back the DA\u2014years after many cast their first votes in 1994 for apartheid&#8217;s white minority nationalists that oppressed them but ranked them higher than blacks&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Coloureds who have African, European, East Asian and South Indian roots had more privileges than the darker-skinned black majority in apartheid&#8217;s strict hierarchy designed to keep South Africa&#8217;s people apart and protect white power.<\/p>\n<p>The divisions cut across separate housing, education and even language with Dutch settler-derived Afrikaans spoken instead of local African languages.<\/p>\n<p>And while power has shifted, many still feel sidelined&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.citizen.co.za\/citizen\/content\/en\/citizen\/elections-2011?oid=194789&amp;sn=Detail&amp;pid=185563&amp;Mixed-race-vote-key-to-Cape-Town-in-S--Africa-polls\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mixed race vote key to Cape Town in S.
