{"id":14159,"date":"2011-06-11T05:22:17","date_gmt":"2011-06-11T05:22:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=14159"},"modified":"2021-11-23T02:27:54","modified_gmt":"2021-11-23T02:27:54","slug":"drole-de-felix-a-search-for-cultural-identity-on-the-road","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=14159","title":{"rendered":"Dr\u00f4le de F\u00e9lix : A Search for Cultural Identity on the Road"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/widescreenjournal.org\/index.php\/journal\/article\/view\/106\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>Dr\u00f4le de F\u00e9lix : A Search for Cultural Identity on the Road<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/widescreenjournal.org\/index.php\/journal\/index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wide Screen<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/widescreenjournal.org\/index.php\/journal\/issue\/view\/5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Volume 3, Number 1<\/a> (2011)<br \/>\nISSN: 1757-3920<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/zelieasava.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Z\u00e9lie Asava<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With the emergence of <em>la culture <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beur\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">beur<\/a><\/em> in the 1980s\u2014and the birth of a new type of filmmaking influenced by postcolonial politics, world cinema, the new <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hood_film\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hood films<\/a> of the African-American community and its hip hop culture\u2014questions of identity, multiculturalism and being mixed-race came to the fore.\u00a0 Since then, many films have tackled the representation of France\u2019s ethnic minorities onscreen and attempted to\u00a0 move towards representing the dream 2007 presidential candidate <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/S%C3%A9gol%C3%A8ne_Royal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">S\u00e9gol\u00e8ne Royal<\/a> expressed of a \u2018Mixed-Race France\u2019. This article will explore representations of ethnicity, gender and sexuality in <em>Dr\u00f4le de F\u00e9lix\/The Adventures of Felix<\/em> (1999), through the figure of F\u00e9lix, a homosexual, mixed-race (French-North African) man searching for his absent father and his \u2018true\u2019 identity.\u00a0 The film focuses on the demystification of imperialist absolutes and divisions to reveal what lies between, in the interstices.
