Stanley Cobb<\/a>, a professor emeritus in biological sciences, looked around his late mother\u2019s house and saw scores of books and other documents relating to someone called <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Cuffee\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Cuffee<\/a>, an 18th Century sea captain.<\/p>\n<p>Cobb\u2019s mother, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paulcuffeeschool.org\/wiggins_page\/wigginssociety.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Rosalind C. Wiggins<\/a>, was an advocate for social and racial justice who spent much of her life studying and teaching about African-Americans and was editor of <em>Paul Cuffee\u2019s Logs and Letters<\/em>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Born on <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cuttyhunk\" target=\"_blank\">Cuttyhunk<\/a> in 1759, Cuffee was one of 10 children. His father, born in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ghana\" target=\"_blank\">Ghana<\/a>, was a former slave and his mother was a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wampanoag_people\" target=\"_blank\">Wampanoag Indian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Cuffee became a wealthy sea captain and had his own ship with a crew of black sailors. He owned property in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Westport,_Massachusetts\" target=\"_blank\">Westport, Massachusetts<\/a>.
