Popular attitudes toward Indian assimilation and United States policy are traced through the cinematic versions of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Squaw_Man_(1914_film)\" target=\"_blank\">The Squaw Man<\/a><\/em> and other \u201cIndian dramas\u201d from 1908 to 1916.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">&#8230;the heir is always the one who stays on the land.<br \/>\n\u2014Bourdieu,<br \/>\n<em>The Logic of Practice<\/em>, 1990<\/p>\n<p>Silent Westerns and \u201cIndian dramas\u201d from 1908 to 1916 provide a remarkable window on Euro-American popular culture representations of the encounter between tribal peoples and the United States military and educational establishments. These early Westerns, many of them now unknown or unavailable outside of archives, provide a composite narrative that depicts the white \u201cfamily on the land\u201d emerging from the \u201cbroken home\u201d of a previous mixed-race marriage, and that equates children, land, and gold as the spoils of failed romance, not of war. The ordeal of separating children from their families and cultures through the Indian boarding-school policy\u2014and the trauma of their return home as outsiders\u2014is fully recognized in silent Westerns, which were produced during a time when federal Indian policy encouraged both assimilation and removal from the land. In these tales of interracial romance, captivity, and adoption, defining narrative features include doubling, mistaken identity, and the social and geographic displacement and replacement of persons. Such narrative strategies reflected the physical acts of displacement and replacement that have been hallmarks of U.S. American Indian policy, from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indian_removal\" target=\"_blank\">Indian Removal<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Indian_Wars\" target=\"_blank\">Indian Wars<\/a> through the slow erosion of reservation lands in the twentieth century.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Squaw Man<\/em> (Apfel and De Mille, 1914), the first feature-length Western, offers a particularly influential example of the pattern. The film tells the story of James Wynnegate, a refugee from the corrupt English aristocracy, as he establishes a new life for himself in the American West. Jim\u2019s attempt at ranching fails, but in the process he has an affair with Nat-u-Ritch, the daughter of the local Indian chief. When he finds her making a tiny pair of moccasins, he rushes to get a pastor, who refuses to marry the cross-racial couple. Jim\u2019s ranch hands try to talk him out of the marriage as well, until he shows them the moccasins. The ranch hands then force the pastor at gunpoint to perform the ceremony in a racially inflected version of the \u201cshot-gun marriage.\u201d&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;The plot\u2014adapted from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edwin_Milton_Royle\" target=\"_blank\">Edwin Milton Royle<\/a> and Julie Opp Faversham\u2019s successful stage <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Squaw_Man_(play)\" target=\"_blank\">play<\/a> and 1906 novel\u2014is a defining one for cross-racial romance narratives, and the film is a major landmark in the evolution of American cinema. Adapted for the screen three times by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cecil_B._DeMille\" target=\"_blank\">Cecil B. De Mille<\/a>, in 1914, 1918, and 1931, <em>The Squaw Man<\/em> launched both his directing career and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Samuel_Goldfish\" target=\"_blank\">Samuel Goldfish\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Famous_Players-Lasky\" target=\"_blank\">Lasky Feature Play Co.<\/a>, which would later become the major studio <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer\" target=\"_blank\">Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer<\/a>. Why does <em>The Squaw Man<\/em> narrative\u2014differing as it does from the early Westerns of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tom_Mix\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Mix<\/a>, and certainly from such later iterations of the genre as<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Ford\" target=\"_blank\"> John Ford\u2019s<\/a> <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stagecoach_(1939_film)\" target=\"_blank\">Stagecoach<\/a><\/em>\u2014hold such a crucial place in the development of the Western? And why does this story emerge so strongly in the first two decades of the twentieth century? Why does this film, and others based on it, link Indian women\u2019s marriage to white men with the women\u2019s suicide? What is the significance of the forced separation of Indian mother and mixed-blood child that forms the heart of the film\u2019s conflict, as one family gives way to another?&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Contemporaneous with Westerns and \u201cIndian dramas\u201d such as <em>The Squaw Man<\/em>, the writings of native and mixed-blood writers such as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pauline_Johnson\" target=\"_blank\">E. Pauline Johnson<\/a>, Gertrude Bonnin (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zitkala-Sa\" target=\"_blank\">Zitkala-Sa<\/a>), <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mourning_Dove_(author)\" target=\"_blank\">Mourning Dove<\/a> (Christine Quintasket), <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Joseph_Mathews\" target=\"_blank\">John Joseph Mathews<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/D%27Arcy_McNickle\" target=\"_blank\">D\u2019Arcy McNickle<\/a> provide an indigenous literary context for\u2014and counterpoint to\u2014popular representations of native people. Pauline Johnson\u2019s short stories, including \u201cA Red Girl\u2019s Reasoning,\u201d \u201cAs It Was in the Beginning,\u201d and \u201cThe Derelict,\u201d emphasize the strength of Indian women and moral weakness of white men in cross-racial relationships. Mourning Dove\u2019s novel <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mourning_Dove_(author)#Cogewea.2C_the_Half-Blood\" target=\"_blank\">Cogewea<\/a><\/em>, first published in 1927, narrates the betrayal of the mixed-blood protagonist Cogewea by her white lover. Other native writers depict the emotional impact of family separation and boarding-school education. D\u2019Arcy McNickle was himself forced to attend the Chemawa Indian Boarding School in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oregon\" target=\"_blank\">Oregon<\/a>, despite his own and his parents\u2019 objections (Child 13), and writes about children being taken to boarding school in his short story \u201cTrain Time\u201d (Peyer).
