Sharfstein<\/a><\/strong>, Professor of Law (and author of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=11122\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Invisible Line: Three American Families and the Secret Journey from Black to White<\/em><\/a>)<br \/>\n<em>Vanderbilt University<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In America race has always been a potent issue\u2014and it&#8217;s clear from some of the reactions to the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barack_Obama\" target=\"_blank\">Obama<\/a> presidency that racial tension still simmers beneath the surface of the American body politic.<\/p>\n<p>If you were to look at the legal history of race you would see an intricate process defining who is black and who is white in America, and you would assume that there is a strongly policed colour line, especially in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Southern_United_States\" target=\"_blank\">Southern States<\/a>.
