On March 1 and 2, 1993, the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Centers_for_Disease_Control_and_Prevention\" target=\"_blank\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Agency_for_Toxic_Substances_and_Disease_Registry\" target=\"_blank\">Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry<\/a> conducted their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=38093\" target=\"_blank\">Workshop on the Use of Race and Ethnicity in Public Health Surveillance<\/a>. One of the general principles agreed upon by workshop participants was that \u201cthe concept of race as assessed in pub\u00adlic health surveillance is a social measure. Biological or genetic reference, or both, should be made with extreme caution.\u201d Clearly, the call for instituting a mul\u00adtiracial category for purposes of disease screening is medically insupportable. According\u00a0to epidemiologists and workshop participants <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecommunityguide.org\/about\/cdc-staff.html#rhahn\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Hahn<\/a> and Donna Stroup, medical screening by biological race is not desired since \u201cwhat is <em>mea\u00adsured<\/em> as \u2018race\u2019 in public health surveillance is not a biological characteristic, <strong>but rather a self-perception for which phenotypic characteristics may be one among many criteria&#8230;<\/strong> Even were distinctive biological markers of race determined, it would be difficult, if not impossible, to assess such markers in common surveil\u00adlance processes and in the census.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Rainier Spencer, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=1039\" target=\"_blank\">Spurious Issues: Race and Multiracial Identity Politics in the United States<\/a><\/em>, (Boulder: Westview Press,1999), 158.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The claim that persons identifying as multiracial suffer health risks due to the lack of a federal multiracial category is without foundation.
