\nMusic was hardly mentioned as Selecter<\/a> frontwoman Pauline Black<\/a> launched her autobiography at Houseman\u2019s radical bookshop<\/a> in London on Wednesday evening (last night 3 Aug).

\nShe told the 70 people packed into a sweltering store that Black by Design<\/em> was the story of her journey from being a mixed race baby adopted by a white family in Romford<\/a>, Essex<\/a>, to Top of the Pops<\/a> and reconciliation with her own black culture.<\/p>\n

Her family refered to her as \u201ccoloured\u201d because they thought it was the most polite term available.<\/p>\n

Pauline described adoption as \u201clegalised identity theft\u201d and said she had changed her surname from Vickers to Black so people \u201chad to call me black\u201d.
