In 1856-57, Mary E. Stafford of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cumberland_Island\" target=\"_blank\">Cumberland Island<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Georgia_(U.S._state)\" target=\"_blank\">Georgia<\/a> attended Wheaton. She was the daughter of a white father [Robert Stafford]\u00a0and an African-American mother [Elizabeth Bernardey], and seems to have been able to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=5864\" target=\"_blank\">pass<\/a> as white, since it was not known that she was of mixed race until many years after she had actually attended Wheaton.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <em>General Files: 1856-1857: J.
