{"id":16566,"date":"2011-09-27T20:45:43","date_gmt":"2011-09-27T20:45:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=16566"},"modified":"2014-02-18T02:18:50","modified_gmt":"2014-02-18T02:18:50","slug":"16566","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=16566","title":{"rendered":"Brown Bag: Mixed-race tension in early America"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smudailycampus.com\/news\/brown-bag-mixed-race-tension-in-early-america-1.2603166\" target=\"_blank\">Brown Bag: Mixed-race tension in early America<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smudailycampus.com\" target=\"_blank\">The Daily Campus<\/a>: The Independent Voice of Southern Methodist University Since 1915<br \/>\nDallas, Texas<br \/>\n2011-09-21<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"mailto:ljmay@smu.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Logan May<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The struggle of mixed race families in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Southwestern_United_States\" target=\"_blank\">Southwest America<\/a> was a daunting issue in the early 19th century.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the Brown Bag Lecture Series of the Southwest, SMU Director of Southwest Studies <a href=\"http:\/\/andrewgraybill.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Andrew Graybill<\/a> shared a detailed account of a mixed White-Native American family from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Montana\" target=\"_blank\">Montana<\/a> who faced an exponential amount of racial discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>In the Texana Room of DeGolyer Library Wednesday afternoon, listeners gathered and silently snacked on their lunches as Graybill spoke of the Clarke family.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To walk in two worlds was impossible,&#8221; Graybill said, &#8220;whites looked at mixed blood with repulsion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His book, entitled <em>A Mixture of So Many Bloods<\/em>, recalled the life of Helen Clarke and the backlash she received for being the daughter of a white man and a Native American woman. At this time in the early 1800s, marriage within the two races was common, and children served as brokers between the two groups.
