Boyton<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fas.harvard.edu\/~amciv\/faculty\/gates.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">Henry Louis Gates Jr.<\/a> is having lunch at New York\u2019s Union Square Cafe, hoping Danny Meyer\u2019s chicken soup will soothe his allergies. He has just returned from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Newark,_New_Jersey\" target=\"_blank\">Newark<\/a>, where he interviewed <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cory_Booker\" target=\"_blank\">Mayor Cory Booker<\/a> for his new PBS series, \u201cFinding Your Roots.\u201d After lunch he\u2019s catching a flight to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martha%E2%80%99s_Vineyard\" target=\"_blank\">Martha\u2019s Vineyard<\/a> for <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bill_Clinton\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Clinton\u2019s<\/a> birthday party. Author of 14 books, editor in chief of the online publication <em>The Root<\/em>, documentary producer and presenter, Gates, 61, is a one-man multimedia industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have no plans to slow down,\u201d he says cheerfully.<\/p>\n<p>A clear line runs through Gates\u2019s myriad projects. \u201cI want to get into the educational <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/DNA\" target=\"_blank\">DNA<\/a> of American culture,\u201d he says. \u201cI want 10 percent of the common culture, more or less, to be black.\u201d Gates\u2019s love of technology has been a boon in this regard. He is always thinking about new ways to circulate his ideas. \u201cThe Norton Anthology of African-American Literature\u201d (1996) included a CD of oral literature with recordings of poets like <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Langston_Hughes\" target=\"_blank\">Langston Hughes<\/a> reading their work. He followed up \u201cAfricana: The Encyclopedia of the African American Experience\u201d (1999) with Microsoft\u2019s Encarta Africana on CD-ROM. The success of <em>The Huffington Post<\/em> inspired him to start <em>The Root<\/em>, <em>The Washington Post\u2019s<\/em> online African-American publication. \u201cI\u2019m a tech geek. Whenever I read about something new, I think to myself, How can I take this and make it black?\u201d&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Gates is a member of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.personalgenomes.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Personal Genome Project<\/a> at Harvard Medical School, and he and his late father (who died at age 97 on Christmas Eve, 2010) were the first African-Americans to have their entire genomes sequenced. The tests showed that Gates Jr. has 50 percent European ancestry and descends from <a href=\"http:\/\/genforum.genealogy.com\/redman\/messages\/1716.html\" target=\"_blank\">John Redman<\/a>, a free African-American who fought in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Revolutionary_War\" target=\"_blank\">Revolutionary War<\/a>.
