She checked Hispanic because she is 25 percent Mexican.<\/p>\n<p>Goronkin said she doesn\u2019t always select Hispanic when she is asked for her race. The other three quarters that make up her ethnicity \u2014 Norwegian, Russian and Scottish \u2014 are considered white. She said she usually has trouble deciding what to choose.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019ve definitely selected just white on some forms,\u201d Goronkin said. \u201cI\u2019ve also done mixed or chose both Mexican and Caucasian, if I could.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nGoronkin doesn\u2019t celebrate any traditions of Mexican culture, but she believes selecting multiple races represents her accurately.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;When political science professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wwu.edu\/polsci\/faculty-staff\/faculty\/johnson.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">Vernon Johnson<\/a> looks out his office window into Western\u2019s Red Square, he doesn\u2019t physically see these statistics represented on campus.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u201cIf you\u2019re walking across campus with a mass amount of people, you will pass people that consider themselves of mixed races, and with a quick observation of those particular students you could think they are white,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cHowever, they could be Hispanic, and they might have checked that box.\u201d&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/westernfrontonline.net\/news\/14022-redefining-their-races-more-students-choosing-to-identify-as-mixed-\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Redefining their races: More students choosing to identify as mixed The Western Front Western Washington University Bellingham, Washington 2011-11-18 Casey Malloy When Western Washington University junior Emily Goronkin applied to the university three years ago, she came to a point in the application at which she was asked for her racial identity.
