Simon &amp; Schuster.<\/p>\n<p>As a social studies major in his junior year at Harvard, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mark_Whitaker\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Whitaker<\/a> attended a debate on the subject of ethnicity. One participant was the chairman of the department. Mr. Whitaker stood up to raise some questions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would you tell someone who didn\u2019t <em>have<\/em> a clear ethnic identity?\u201d he asked. \u201cFor example, what would you tell someone who had one parent who was black and another who was white? Who had one parent who was American and another who was European? Who had moved dozens of times as a child and didn\u2019t have a specific place to call home?\u201d Everyone in the room knew that Mr. Whitaker was talking about himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI guess I would say that that\u2019s too bad,\u201d the professor answered. \u201cIn the future I hope we don\u2019t have too many more people like you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Whitaker recounts this story in \u201cMy Long Trip Home,\u201d a book filled with as much family tumult as Jeannette Walls described in \u201cThe Glass Castle\u201d and a racial factor to boot.
