Of mixed race and cultural heritage, he was born in 1902 in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sagua_La_Grande\" target=\"_blank\">Sangua La Grande, Cuba<\/a> to a mother who was a descendent of slaves and a father who was a Chinese immigrant. In his youth he was exposed to the rich heritage of African, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Santer%C3%ADa\" target=\"_blank\">Santaria<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Confucianism\" target=\"_blank\">Confucian<\/a> traditions. These traditions affected him deeply and are reflected in his art which is in the collections of major museums here and abroad.<\/p>\n<p>This film follows Lam from student days in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Havana\" target=\"_blank\">Havana<\/a> through his development as an artist in Europe where he became a close friend of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pablo_Picasso\" target=\"_blank\">Picasso<\/a> and other luminaries.
