There seems to be some uncertainty as to Herriman\u2019s ethnicity\u2014his parents were listed as \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=451\" target=\"_blank\">mulatto<\/a>\u201d in the 1880 census, his own birth certificate says \u201ccolored\u201d but his death certificate says \u201ccaucasian.\u201d From what I can tell, Herriman was a person of mixed races, but it seems that he chose to \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=5864\" target=\"_blank\">pass<\/a>\u201d as white for much of his life.
