The country may not be increasingly multiracial but it certainly is increasingly conscious of its multiracial identity. In <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Inner_Banks#Albemarle_Region\" target=\"_blank\">Northeastern North Carolina<\/a> there is a community that is historically mixed race. Landowning free people of color have lived together in The Winton Triangle for 260 years. Their ancestors include people who moved from the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chesapeake_Bay\" target=\"_blank\">Chesapeake Bay<\/a> area as well as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chowanoke\" target=\"_blank\">Chowanoke<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Meherrin\" target=\"_blank\">Meherrin<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tuscarora_people\" target=\"_blank\">Tuscarora Indians<\/a>, Africans and East Indians.
