{"id":22314,"date":"2012-04-08T22:37:56","date_gmt":"2012-04-08T22:37:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=22314"},"modified":"2012-04-08T22:38:07","modified_gmt":"2012-04-08T22:38:07","slug":"22314","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=22314","title":{"rendered":"A Heritage Celebration: Event recognizes both Hispanic and Native American roots with symposium and several performances"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sanmarcosrecord.com\/features\/x1533026844\/A-Heritage-Celebration-Event-recognizes-both-Hispanic-and-Native-American-roots-with-symposium-and-several-performances\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>A Heritage Celebration: Event recognizes both Hispanic and Native American roots with symposium and several performances<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sanmarcosrecord.com\" target=\"_blank\">San Marcos Daily Record<\/a><br \/>\nSan Marcos, Texas<\/p>\n<p>2011-08-12<\/p>\n<p>San Marcos \u2014 San Marcos will experience a unique, two-in-one heritage celebration in a combination of two nationally recognized heritage months \u2014 Hispanic and Native American \u2014 on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos, 211 Lee Street.<\/p>\n<p>A Sunday Matinee will also take place at 3 p.m. the next day at the Texas Music Theater.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re bringing attention to the fact that most Hispanics in Texas have Native American ancestors and can celebrate two national heritage months,\u201d says Dr. Mario Garza, chair of the <a href=\"http:\/\/indigenouscultures.org\" target=\"_blank\">Indigenous Cultures Institute<\/a> that is producing this event. <strong>\u201cMost Hispanics can legitimately embrace a Native American identity because they still retain much of their indigenous culture like customs, foods and even their Native language.\u201d&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;\u201cRoberto Dr. Cintli Rodriguez will be one of the speakers in our Indigenous-Hispanics Symposium,\u201d said Dr. Lydia French, managing editor of <a href=\"http:\/\/indigenouscultures.org\/nakum\" target=\"_blank\">Nakum<\/a>, the Institute\u2019s online journal. \u201cDr. Rodriguez is one of the major figures in the historic struggle against the Arizona legislature\u2019s anti immigrant law SB 1070 and ban on ethnic studies programs.\u201d&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Dr. Nicole M. Guidotti-Hern\u00e1ndez and Margaret E.
