{"id":22730,"date":"2012-04-27T02:41:04","date_gmt":"2012-04-27T02:41:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=22730"},"modified":"2012-04-27T02:41:04","modified_gmt":"2012-04-27T02:41:04","slug":"number-of-biracial-babies-soars-over-past-decade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=22730","title":{"rendered":"Number of biracial babies soars over past decade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/number-of-biracial-babies-soars-over-past-decade\/2012\/04\/25\/gIQAWRiAiT_story.html?wpisrc=nl_headlines\" target=\"_blank\">Number of biracial babies soars over past decade<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\" target=\"_blank\">The Washington Post<\/a><br \/>\n2012-04-26<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/carol-morello\/2011\/02\/28\/ABCEisM_page.html\" target=\"_blank\">Carol Morello<\/a><\/strong>, Demographics Reporter<\/p>\n<p>The number of mixed-race babies has soared over the past decade, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/newsroom\/releases\/archives\/2010_census\/cb12-cn32.html\" target=\"_blank\">new census data show<\/a>, a result of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/newsroom\/releases\/archives\/2010_census\/cb12-68.html\" target=\"_blank\">more interracial couples<\/a> and a cultural shift in how many parents identify their children in a multiracial society.<\/p>\n<p>More than 7 percent of the 3.5 million children born in the year before the 2010 Census were of two or more races, up from barely 5 percent a decade earlier. The number of children born to black and white couples and to Asian and white couples almost doubled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think people are more comfortable in identifying themselves, and their children, as mixed race,\u201d said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/experts\/freyw.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">William H. Frey<\/a>, a Brookings Institution demographer who analyzed detailed census data on mixed-race infants. \u201cIt\u2019s much more socially acceptable, more mainstream, to say, \u2018That\u2019s what we want to identify them as.\u2019\u201d&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Frey said the census statistics on children with black and white parents in particular show a country that is advancing toward the day when race loses its power to be a hot-button issue.<\/p>\n<p>People who identify themselves as one race tend to be older.
