{"id":23563,"date":"2012-06-02T03:28:08","date_gmt":"2012-06-02T03:28:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=23563"},"modified":"2012-06-02T03:28:08","modified_gmt":"2012-06-02T03:28:08","slug":"racist-tendencies-common-in-too-many-tribes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=23563","title":{"rendered":"Racist Tendencies Common in Too Many Tribes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com\/ict_sbc\/racist-tendencies-common-in-too-many-tribes\" target=\"_blank\">Racist Tendencies Common in Too Many Tribes<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com\" target=\"_blank\">Indian Country Today Media Network<\/a><br \/>\n2012-05-23<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cedric Sunray<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MOWA_Band_of_Choctaw_Indians\" target=\"_blank\">MOWA Band of Choctaw Indians<\/a><br \/>\nAlabama, USA<\/p>\n<p>Last month\u2019s racially motivated killings in Oklahoma, perpetrated by Cherokee Indian Jake England and his white roommate against members of North Tulsa\u2019s black community, once again bring to light the prejudicial tendencies held by many in our Indian communities.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nThis reality is the literal \u201cNegro Elephant in the Room,\u201d which many tribal communities attempt to pass off as issues of sovereignty, enrollment decision making, \u201cand, well we had it as bad as them\u201d rhetoric. However, the real effect is that our children grow up in environments where tribal governments and tribal members broadcast their racist ideologies \u2014 such as in the more recent case of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cherokee_freedmen_controversy\" target=\"_blank\">Cherokee Freedmen<\/a>\u2014to an audience of young people who are not provided with the full histories and realities of their historical connections to the black community.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n<strong>I have seen one too many times where the half-black grandchildren of Indian people are even marginalized by their own Indian families or are viewed as the \u201clone exception\u201d to their prejudicial leanings due to their blood connection.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 1978, Terry Anderson and Kirke Kickingbird were hired by the National Congress of American Indians to research the issue of federal recognition and present a paper on their findings to the National Conference on Federal Recognition which was being held in Nashville, Tennessee. Their paper, \u201cAn Historical Perspective on the Issue of Federal Recognition and Non-recognition\u201d closed with the following statement:<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u201cThe reasons that are usually presented to withhold recognition from tribes are <strong>1) that they are racially tainted with the blood of African tribes-men<\/strong> or 2) greed, for newly recognized tribes will share in the appropriations for services given to the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
