Ms. Trethewey, 46, was born in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gulfport,_Mississippi\" target=\"_self\">Gulfport, Miss.<\/a>, and is the first Southerner to hold the post since <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Penn_Warren\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Penn Warren<\/a>, the original laureate, and the first African-American since <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rita_Dove\" target=\"_blank\">Rita Dove<\/a> in 1993.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m still a little in disbelief,\u201d Ms. Trethewey said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the recent laureates <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/W._S._Merwin\" target=\"_blank\">W. S. Merwin<\/a> and her immediate predecessor, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philip_Levine_(poet)\" target=\"_blank\">Philip Levine<\/a>, both in their 80s when appointed, Ms. Trethewey, who will officially take up her duties in September, <strong>is still in midcareer and not well-known outside poetry circles.<\/strong> Her work combines free verse with more traditional forms like the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sonnet\" target=\"_blank\">sonnet<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Villanelle\" target=\"_blank\">villanelle<\/a> to explore memory and the racial legacy of America. Her fourth collection, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=23366\" target=\"_blank\">Thrall<\/a>,\u201d is scheduled to appear in the fall.
