Her book will map the intersections of personal and cultural history, as it navigates the channels and byways of memory and the legacy of race in America. Chronicling her life from early childhood \u2013 the daughter of a black mother and a white father, she was born in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gulfport,_Mississippi\" target=\"_blank\">Gulfport, Mississippi<\/a> a year before the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the anti-<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=450\" target=\"_blank\">miscegenation<\/a> laws with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=415\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Loving v. Virginia<\/em><\/a> \u2013 this deeply felt memoir explores Trethewey\u2019s experience growing up mixed race in the South of the \u201870s and \u201880s, her close relationship with her mother, who was later murdered by her stepfather, a Vietnam veteran, and the repercussions and resonances of these seminal events in her life and work.<\/p>\n<p>The deal was negotiated between Daniel Halpern, President and Publisher of Ecco, and Rob McQuilkin of Lippincott Massie McQuilkin. Halpern says, \u201cI can\u2019t remember a more emotionally intense auction for a book, ever.
