Reginald] Daniel<\/a>, who grew up black in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kentucky\" target=\"_blank\">Kentucky<\/a>, said he has been thinking about his racial identity since Dec. 2, 1955, when his first-grade teacher reported that <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rosa_Parks\" target=\"_blank\">Rosa Parks<\/a> had been arrested for refusing to let a white passenger have her seat on the bus. \u201cIt\u2019s time we colored people stood up for our rights,\u201d the teacher told her students.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel was puzzled. He raised his hand and asked the teacher who \u201ccolored\u201d people were. \u201cEveryone in this school,\u201d the teacher, startled, replied. But, Daniel persisted, what color are they? \u201cWe\u2019re brown!
