Sometimes I think about Great-Uncle Paul who left Tuskegee,<\/a>
\nAlabama to become a forester in Oregon<\/a> and in so doing
\nbecame fundamentally white for the rest of his life, except
\nwhen he traveled without his white wife to visit his siblings\u2014
\nnow in New York<\/a>, now in Harlem, USA<\/a>\u2014just as pale-skinned,
\nas straight-haired, as blue-eyed as Paul, and black. Paul never told anyone
\nhe was white, he just didn\u2019t say that he was black, and who could imagine,
\nan Oregon forester in 1930 as anything other than white?…<\/p>\n
