The intersecting lines of heritage in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joe_Bataan\" target=\"_blank\">Joe Bataan\u2019s<\/a> music and identity offer a unique entry point into the lives and community commitments of the civil rights movement and a deeper understanding of the American experience. <strong>Born and raised in <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/East_Harlem\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Spanish Harlem<\/strong><\/a><strong> to a Filipino father and an African American mother, Joe Bataan symbolizes the dynamic intersections between Afro-Asian-Latino histories and cultural forms.<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u00a0<br \/>\nJoin us for a public discussion featuring Joe Bataan, activist and performer <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nobuko_Miyamoto\" target=\"_blank\">Nobuko Miyamoto<\/a>, and African American Studies scholar <a href=\"http:\/\/www.history.uconn.edu\/people\/ogbar.php\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Jeffrey O.G. Ogbar<\/a>. With them we revisit the political and cultural ferment and collaboration of the late 1960s and 1970s in New York City when groups such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_Panther_Party\" target=\"_blank\">Black Panther Party<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Young_Lords\" target=\"_blank\">Young Lords Party<\/a>, Asian Americans for Action, and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/El_Comite-MINP\" target=\"_blank\">El Comit\u00e9<\/a> contributed to dynamic social justice movements, catalyzed largely by young people, which inspired cultural pride, creativity, and activism.
