Obasogie<\/a><\/strong>, Associate Professor of Law<br \/>\n<em>University of California, San Francisco<\/em><br \/>\nAlso: Senior Fellow<br \/>\n<em>Center for Genetics and Society<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> reports that sales for <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Isosorbide_dinitrate\/hydralazine\" target=\"_blank\">BiDil<sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/a>\u2014the first drug to receive <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Food_and_Drug_Administration\" target=\"_blank\">FDA<\/a>approval to treat a specific race\u2014are unexpectedly slow. Marketed as treating heart failure in African-Americans, BiDil<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> was expected to generate $130 million in sales this year; <strong>thus far, only a little over $5 million has come in.<\/strong> Estimates show that only 1% of the 750,000 Blacks suffering from heart failure are using it.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no shortage of explanations for why Black people are about as unlikely to take BiDil<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> as they are to name a newborn child <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hurricane_Katrina\" target=\"_blank\">Katrina<\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;But, perhaps there\u2019s another explanation that the Wall Street wing tips are missing: a sense of history.<\/p>\n<p>During a conference I attended earlier this year on BiDil<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> and race specific medicines, an older Black woman in the audience stood up and said \u201cIf I were sick and somebody told me that they had a drug just for Black people to help me, I\u2019d say to them: give me what the white people are taking.\u201d&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biopoliticaltimes.org\/article.php?id=2018\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Slooooooow Sales for BiDil\u00ae Biopolitical Times: The weblog of the Center for Genetics and Society 2006-10-18 Osagie K.
