In this 1769 advertisement <a href=\" http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Jefferson\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas Jefferson<\/a>, who had inherited half of his father <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peter_Jefferson\" target=\"_blank\">Peter&#8217;s<\/a> more than sixty slaves, offered a forty shilling reward for the return of &#8220;a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=451\" target=\"_blank\">Mulatto<\/a> slave called Sandy.&#8221; After Sandy&#8217;s return, Jefferson sold him, as he did many problem slaves, despite his value as a shoemaker and jockey, to Col.
