She doesn\u2019t \u201clook like an indian.\u201d But what do Indians look like?<\/p>\n<p>Just to recap: <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elizabeth_Warren\" target=\"_blank\">Elizabeth Warren<\/a> is run\u00adning for the Sen\u00adate in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Massachusetts\" target=\"_blank\">Massachusetts<\/a>. She\u2019s been widely mocked for claiming herself as \u201cnative Ameri\u00adcan\u201d at var\u00adi\u00adous points in her career. Warren grew up in what\u2019s now <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oklahoma\" target=\"_blank\">Oklahoma<\/a>, a vast region which the US government had originally reserved for Indian tribes relocated from the East&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;The racial past of Americans is far more complicated and ambiguous than Americans generally realize. <a href=\"http:\/\/theaporetic.com\/?p=54\" target=\"_blank\">My favorite example<\/a> is very personal. According to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virginia\" target=\"_blank\">Virginia<\/a>, the state in which I now reside, I am a black man. Had my family stayed in VA, my father could not have attended white schools and my parents would not have been allowed to marry. It\u2019s absurd, and ridiculous: I\u2019m as white as any white man you\u2019d ever imagine, and no one in my family even knew of this history till about a decade ago. But there it is, a mat\u00adter of record.<\/p>\n<p>The man responsible, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Walter_Ashby_Plecker\" target=\"_blank\">Walter Ashby Plecker<\/a>, was convinced there were no \u201creal\u201d indians in VA. Instead, he argued, there lived a mongrel race of intermmarried people, the \u201cWIN\u201d tribe (White, Indian, Negro). If you listed yourself as \u201cIndian\u201d on official documents, Plecker would rewrite them, and change \u201cindian\u201d to \u201ccolored,\u201d because there were no \u201creal\u201d indians. Had Warren grown up in VA, she would have been unable to prove any connec\u00adtion to Indian ancestors, because Plecker destroyed the records.
