{"id":26497,"date":"2012-11-15T21:33:10","date_gmt":"2012-11-15T21:33:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=26497"},"modified":"2012-11-15T21:33:10","modified_gmt":"2012-11-15T21:33:10","slug":"indigenous-giles-stands-by-abbott","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=26497","title":{"rendered":"Indigenous Giles stands by Abbott"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ntnews.com.au\/article\/2012\/11\/15\/315136_ntnews.html\" target=\"_blank\">Indigenous Giles stands by Abbott<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ntnews.com.au\" target=\"_blank\">NT News<\/a><br \/>\nDarwin, Northern Territory, Australia<br \/>\n2012-11-15<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nigel Adlam<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>TERRITORY indigenous politician <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adam_Giles\" target=\"_blank\">Adam Giles<\/a> has refused to condemn <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tony_Abbott\" target=\"_blank\">Tony Abbott<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Abbott said <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alison_Anderson\" target=\"_blank\">Alison Anderson<\/a> was an &#8220;authentic representative&#8221; of ancient Central Australian culture but mixed-race MP <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ken_Wyatt\" target=\"_blank\">Ken Wyatt<\/a> was &#8220;not a man of culture&#8221;.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nMr Giles also refused to criticise the Coalition leader for not including him in a list of the NT&#8217;s Aboriginal Members of the Legislative Assembly&#8230;<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nBut Mr Giles did warn that Aboriginality was a &#8220;sensitive subject&#8221;.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n&#8220;Sometimes the smallest word can get the hairs on your back going,&#8221; he said.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nMr Abbott said he wanted to increase indigenous representation in the national parliament.<\/p>\n<p>But he seemed to blunder into the &#8220;who&#8217;s an Aborigine?&#8221; minefield when he then made the comparison with Mr Wyatt &#8211; calling him an &#8220;urban Aboriginal&#8221;.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nMr Abbott&#8217;s office yesterday said he had not been implying Mr Wyatt was not indigenous&#8230;<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nMr Giles said he wouldn&#8217;t get involved in the argument about &#8220;who is more authentic&#8221;.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n&#8220;It&#8217;s abhorrent,&#8221; he said.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n&#8220;All indigenous people know who they are.&#8221;<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nIn a seeming reference to the difference between mixed-race people and full-blooded Aborigines, the Transport Minister said: &#8220;I know how many indigenous Australians have a hole in their heart in wanting for cultural enrichment&#8230;<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nRead the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ntnews.com.au\/article\/2012\/11\/15\/315136_ntnews.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Indigenous Giles stands by Abbott NT News Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia 2012-11-15 Nigel Adlam TERRITORY indigenous politician Adam Giles has refused to condemn Tony Abbott.
