I&#8217;m adding my children to the arsenal of weapons for change<\/em><\/p>\n<p>n the late 1940s, the Eurasian poet <a href=\"http:\/\/www8.open.ac.uk\/researchprojects\/makingbritain\/content\/cedric-dover\" target=\"_blank\">Cedric Dover<\/a> wrote a poem about his racial identity. Entitled <em>The Brown Phoenix<\/em>, it includes the lines: I am tomorrow\u2019s man\/ Offering to share\/Love, and the difficult quest,\/In the emerging plan.<\/p>\n<p>How fitting that in the week that a post-war musical, <em>Privates on Parade<\/em>, opened with a Eurasian love interest\u2014\u201cWelsh Bombay\u201d\u2014rejected on the grounds of her colour, we learn that in the 2011 census, the number of mixed-race people in the UK has doubled to 1.2 million. On the same day, the On the same day, the think-tank British Future reported that only 15 per cent of people oppose mixed-race relationships. Among the under-25s, that drops to under 5 per cent. British Future calls it The <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=26932\" target=\"_blank\">Melting Pot Generation<\/a><\/em>. <em>The Sun<\/em> proudly declared: \u201cWe Are the World.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Should we be surprised by this after a summer of sporting magic in which so many British Olympians, including the poster girl <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jessica_Ennis\" target=\"_blank\">Jessica Ennis<\/a>, were golden-hued \u2013 an event masterminded by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sebastian_Coe\" target=\"_blank\">Lord Coe<\/a> whose father is white English and mother Indian? London has a mayor with a mixed-race wife. Half the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_X_Factor_(UK)\" target=\"_blank\">X Factor<\/a> contestants, from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leona_Lewis\" target=\"_blank\">Leona Lewis<\/a> to Marvin and Aston from JLS and this year\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jahmene_Douglas#Jahm.C3.A9ne_Douglas\" target=\"_blank\">Jahmene Douglas<\/a>, have black fathers and white mothers.
