{"id":26973,"date":"2012-12-16T06:56:55","date_gmt":"2012-12-16T06:56:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=26973"},"modified":"2012-12-16T06:56:55","modified_gmt":"2012-12-16T06:56:55","slug":"dr-yaba-blay-explores-%e2%80%98one-drop%e2%80%99-rule-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=26973","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Yaba Blay Explores \u2018One-Drop\u2019 Rule [VIDEO]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/newsone.com\/2103015\/yaba-blay-cnn\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Yaba Blay Explores \u2018One-Drop\u2019 Rule [VIDEO]<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/newsone.com\" target=\"_blank\">NewsOne: For Black America<\/a><br \/>\n2012-12-14<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/newsone.com\/author\/ionejmays\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Mays<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Remember when <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barack_Obama\" target=\"_blank\">President Barack Obama<\/a> won in 2008 and pundits started asking if the United States was post-racial because we had a Black man in the White House?<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nWell, people like <a href=\"http:\/\/yabablay.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Yaba Blay<\/a> (pictured) knew better.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nBlay, an assistant teaching professor of Africana Studies at Drexel University, explores Black racial identity and the politics of skin color with her creative and thought-provoking <a href=\"http:\/\/1nedrop.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">(<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1<\/span>)ne Drop project<\/a>.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nThe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=3208\" target=\"_blank\">one-drop rule<\/a> refers to the centuries-old rule that deemed anyone with any sort of African heritage to be Black, even if you are of mixed heritage. It\u2019s the idea that one drop of Black blood makes you Black. The rule is still alive and well today, which has been discussed by people of mixed heritage like Obama and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Halle_Berry\" target=\"_blank\">Halle Berry<\/a>.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nAnd it\u2019s an issue we play out with one another. Four hundred years after Blacks were first brought to this country as slaves, it wasn\u2019t uncommon for African Americans to discriminate against one another based on the color of their complexions. Just look at the complexions of women considered to be attractive in the media productions of African Americans.
