According to exit polls in November, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barack_Obama\" target=\"_blank\">President Barack Obama<\/a> won the votes of about 93 percent of African Americans, 71 percent of Hispanics (crucial to his victory in Colorado) and 73 percent of Asians. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mitt_Romney\" target=\"_blank\">Mitt Romney<\/a> took 59 percent of the white vote.<\/p>\n<p>Looking at these numbers, you\u2019d think all voters fit neatly into one \u2014 and only one \u2014 racial or ethnic category. Pretty strange, considering that the guy who got re-elected doesn\u2019t fit neatly into one category himself. Black father, white mother: Obama may identify as African American, but it doesn\u2019t take Nate Silver to do the math and conclude that our president is biracial&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Mixed-race identities defy easy matching with political attitudes. In a world of Democrats and Republicans, blue states and red, mixed identities remind us that we\u2019re all individuals, with beliefs that are mixed, as well.<\/p>\n<p>As a fiction writer, identities \u2014 and the stories we tell about ourselves \u2014 grab me more than overtly political issues. Who is a Westerner?
