Rhinelander<\/em> found in favor of a mixed-race woman sued for marriage annulment by her white husband.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leonard_Rhinelander\" target=\"_blank\">Leonard Kip Rhinelander<\/a>, a wealthy white society man, pursued and in 1924 married Alice Jones, a working class woman with British parents\u2014one white, the other of mixed ethnicity. Only one month after their marriage, Leonard sued to annul the marriage, claiming that Alice had misrepresented her racial background.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard\u2019s family had objected to the couple\u2019s relationship throughout their courtship, but had failed to break them up. By marrying Alice, Leonard caused her to be the first African American woman listed in The <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social_Register\" target=\"_blank\">Social Register.<\/a>..<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=3242\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Property Rites: The Rhinelander Trial, Passing, and the Protection of Whiteness<\/em><\/a> (UNC Press 2009), Elizabeth Smith-Pryor argues that the Rhinelander trial encapsulated the tremendous anxieties over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=5864\" target=\"_blank\">racial passing<\/a>, class slippage, and black migration in the northern United States during this era.<\/p>\n<p>Other books about the trial include Angela Onwuachi-Willig\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=24771\" target=\"_blank\"><em>According to Our Hearts: Rhinelander v.
