Klein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seth_Jones_(ice_hockey)\" target=\"_blank\">Seth Jones<\/a> probably should have wound up a basketball player. He is tall, with a great vertical leap, and his father is <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Popeye_Jones\" target=\"_blank\">Popeye Jones<\/a>, who played 11 years in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Basketball_Association\" target=\"_blank\">N.B.A.<\/a> and is now an assistant coach with the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brooklyn_Nets\" target=\"_blank\">Nets<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But instead, Seth Jones, 18, is projected to be a top pick in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Hockey_League\" target=\"_blank\">N.H.L.<\/a> draft and may be on his way to becoming hockey\u2019s first African-American star.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d be shocked myself if I heard a story like that,\u201d Jones said, when asked if people are surprised by the combination of a basketball father and a hockey son. \u201cMe and my two brothers all play hockey, so it was weird, I guess, that none of us played basketball.\u201d&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Now in his first year with the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Portland_Winterhawks\" target=\"_blank\">Portland Winter Hawks<\/a> of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Western_Hockey_League\" target=\"_blank\">Western Hockey League<\/a>, Jones has 28 points in 31 games, third among rookies, and a plus-27 mark, fourth among all players. On the ice he is a commanding presence, a hard hitter. But more often he is the rare defenseman who can control a game\u2019s tempo with his stickhandling and passing \u2014 a \u201cfull-package defenseman,\u201d in the words of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phil_Housley\" target=\"_blank\">Phil Housley<\/a>, the United States coach.<\/p>\n<p>Probably not what anyone expected from a son of Popeye Jones&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;The N.H.L., mired in a lockout and struggling to renew fan interest, would probably welcome the marketing potential of a young African-American star, especially if Jones were to play, say, in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brooklyn\" target=\"_blank\">Brooklyn<\/a> when the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Islanders_(NHL)\" target=\"_blank\">Islanders<\/a> move there in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Seth, whose mother, Amy, is white, said he would prefer that race not be part of the conversation when it comes to his hockey career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to be looked at as an African-American, you know?\u201d he said. \u201cI want to be looked at as someone who has good character, and people know me for the person I am, not my color.\u201d&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/12\/21\/sports\/hockey\/seth-jones-a-rising-hockey-star-has-nba-dna-on-the-ice.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Rising Hockey Star With N.B.A. DNA The New York Times 2012-12-20 Jeff Z.
