What defines you?<\/a><br \/>\nCable News Network (CNN)<br \/>\n2012-12-15<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www-personal.umich.edu\/~tiya\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tiya Miles<\/a><\/strong>, Professor of American Culture, Afroamerican and African Studies, and Native American Studies<br \/>\n<em>University of Michigan<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Editor&#8217;s note: Historian and author Tiya Miles is a professor at the University of Michigan&#8217;s Afroamerican and African Studies department and a 2011 MacArthur genius award recipient.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>(CNN) \u2013<\/strong> In the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_txH0HJMIYU\" target=\"_blank\">documentary film &#8220;Black Indians,&#8221;<\/a> a man who appears to be African-American recounts his delight at eliciting shocked looks from strangers when he launches into a conversation with his wife in the Cherokee language.<\/p>\n<p>The man who tells this story is Cherokee as well as black and a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma.
