{"id":28125,"date":"2013-02-06T05:41:12","date_gmt":"2013-02-06T05:41:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=28125"},"modified":"2013-05-27T02:33:28","modified_gmt":"2013-05-27T02:33:28","slug":"what-does-martin-luther-king-mean-to-latinos-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=28125","title":{"rendered":"What does Martin Luther King mean to Latinos today?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bentley.edu\/impact\/articles\/what-does-martin-luther-king-mean-latinos-today\" target=\"_blank\">What does Martin Luther King mean to Latinos today?<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bentley.edu\/impact\" target=\"_blank\">Bentley IMPACT &#8211; The Power of Ideas<\/a><br \/>\nBentley University, Waltham, Massachusetts<br \/>\n2013-01-17<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/faculty.bentley.edu\/details.asp?uname=dblancero\" target=\"_blank\">Donna Maria Blancero<\/a><\/strong>, Associate Professor of Management<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I have a dream, that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As we celebrate <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martin_Luther_King,_Jr._Day\" target=\"_blank\">Martin Luther King Jr. Day<\/a> in 2013, we must ask ourselves the question: has his dream become a reality for Latinos?<\/p>\n<p>We know that <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martin_Luther_King,_Jr.\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. King<\/a> inspired many Latinos, including <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cesar_Chavez\" target=\"_blank\">Cesar Chavez<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dolores_Huerta\" target=\"_blank\">Dolores Huerta<\/a>. Latinos, just like other Americans, consider Dr. King a great leader of the civil rights movement. If he were alive today, he likely would be working side by side with Latinos to address issues of inequality.<\/p>\n<p>But what does his legacy mean for us today? Has his dream been achieved?&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;When I ask participants in my research to self-identify their race (they all self-identify as Latino), I am typically met with a range of responses. Some are angry at me and state that they are Mexican American or Puerto Rican and that I shouldn\u2019t be asking about race\u2014their race, they say, is Latino! Others have written in comments, such as \u201cI checked off \u2018white\u2019 but don\u2019t tell my family, they would be angry at me.\u201d Many Latinos have mixed backgrounds that don\u2019t easily fit into a box.
