{"id":29417,"date":"2013-03-09T01:54:29","date_gmt":"2013-03-09T01:54:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=29417"},"modified":"2013-03-09T10:11:25","modified_gmt":"2013-03-09T10:11:25","slug":"ben-ur-awarded-study-grant-by-hadassah-brandeis-institute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=29417","title":{"rendered":"Ben-Ur awarded study grant by Hadassah-Brandeis Institute"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.umass.edu\/loop\/content\/ben-ur-awarded-study-grant-hadassah-brandeis-institute\" target=\"_blank\">Ben-Ur awarded study grant by Hadassah-Brandeis Institute<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.umass.edu\/loop\" target=\"_blank\">In the Loop: News for Staff and Faculty<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.umass.edu\" target=\"_blank\">University of Massachusetts, Amherst<\/a><br \/>\n2012-12-13<\/p>\n<p>Associate professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.umass.edu\/judaic\/faculty\/avivaben-ur.html\" target=\"_blank\">Aviva Ben-Ur<\/a> of the Department of Judaic and Near Eastern Studies has been awarded a Senior Grant in History from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brandeis.edu\/hbi\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hadassah-Brandeis Institute <\/a>for her book project \u201cEurafrican Identity in a Jewish Society: Suriname, 1660-1863.\u201d<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nBen-Ur\u2019s book project focuses on slave society in the former Dutch colony of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Suriname\" target=\"_blank\">Suriname<\/a> in South America, where Jews of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iberian_Peninsula\" target=\"_blank\">Iberian<\/a> origin were among the earliest colonists. She examines the ever-shifting boundaries and bridges of Jewish communal belonging in Suriname and focuses on the special role enslaved and free Eurafrican women played in expanding the definition of Jewishness and collapsing the social hierarchies that distinguished whites from non-whites.
