No. 22253)<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>University of Buffalo, The State University of New York<br \/>\nSpring 2013<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.buffalo.edu\/directory\/find-people-detail-page.html?uid=sm246\" target=\"_blank\">Susan Muchshima Moynihan<\/a><\/strong>, Assistant Professor of English<\/p>\n<p>This course brings together Asian American and African American texts to destabilize our understandings of race; to situate racial formations in political and historical moments marked by the intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality, and national and transnational affiliations; and to consider how literary strategies facilitate political engagement with these issues. The course will proceed in four parts.<\/p>\n<p>Part I \u201cRacial Ambiguity and the Dynamics of Passing\u201d will engage <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_W._Chesnutt\" target=\"_blank\">Charles Chesnutt\u2019s<\/a> <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=12621\" target=\"_blank\">The House Behind the Cedars<\/a><\/em> and short stories and essays by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sui_Sin_Far\" target=\"_blank\">Edith Eaton<\/a> (Sui Sin Far) and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Winnifred_Eaton\" target=\"_blank\">Winnifred Eaton<\/a> (Onoto Watanna) to address how literary representations of the late-19th and early 20th centuries deployed mixed-race identities and attempts to pass within strict racial hierarchies marked by national and international politics&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>For more information, click <a href=\"http:\/\/english.buffalo.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Spring2013c.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>346-Comparative Ethnic Literatures (Reg.
