He doesn\u2019t agree with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=28727\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Toronto Life<\/em> magazine\u2019s high-profile March cover story<\/a>\u2014the feature describes his book <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=3899\" target=\"_blank\">Black Berry, Sweet Juice<\/a><\/em> as \u201cquaint\u201d\u2014which proclaims <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toronto\" target=\"_blank\">Toronto<\/a> the first post-racial city and declaring the end of single ethnicity status in the country\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Megalopolis_%28city_type%29\" target=\"_blank\">megalopolis<\/a>.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u201c<strong>I detest that idea. I find it quite repulsive.<\/strong> \u2026 It\u2019s just not true. Ask a thousand black students in high schools across Canada if they\u2019ve escaped the challenges of race and I\u2019m pretty sure that 995 of them will tell you absolutely not. I feel that it\u2019s kind of self-serving and self-congratulatory to talk about a post-racial world.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m not talking about myself. I\u2019ve had a very fortunate life. But I\u2019m not convinced that many black kids in society today are living in a post-racial world. <strong>Acting as if Toronto is some nirvana and everybody is happy and mixed, I think, is a slide into la la land.<\/strong>\u201d&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Hill was in town to give two readings at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pier21.ca\/home\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21<\/a>. The morning session featured a reading from <em>Black Berry, Sweet Juice: On Being Black and White in Canada<\/em>, his 2001 non-fiction book about racial identity.
