{"id":30124,"date":"2013-04-04T15:33:00","date_gmt":"2013-04-04T15:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=30124"},"modified":"2013-09-09T04:10:45","modified_gmt":"2013-09-09T04:10:45","slug":"notions-of-race-in-modern-day-mexico-addressed-in-lecture-exhibit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=30124","title":{"rendered":"Notions of race in modern-day Mexico addressed in lecture, exhibit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailytarheel.com\/blog\/canvas\/2013\/04\/authors-photographer-discuss-race-in-mexico\" target=\"_blank\">Notions of race in modern-day Mexico addressed in lecture, exhibit<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailytarheel.com\" target=\"_blank\">The Daily Tar Heel<\/a><br \/>\n2013-04-03<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tat&#8217;yana Berdan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Tar Heel is the student newspaper at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The complicated and nuanced issue of race in Mexico is often overlooked, but The Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History hopes to spark an inclusive conversation.<\/p>\n<p>The Stone Center is presenting a conversation with <a href=\"http:\/\/sociology.colorado.edu\/people\/Sue-Christina%20%20\" target=\"_blank\">Christina Sue<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/people.jmu.edu\/lewis2la\/\" target=\"_blank\">Laura Lewis<\/a>, two scholars with extensive knowledge of the issue of race in modern-day Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the talk, the Stone Center is also unveiling a new photo exhibit, \u201cLa Costa Chica,\u201d by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diasporacitizen.com\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">Wendy Phillips<\/a>, a UNC alumna.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere at the Stone Center, we have a tradition of discussing these types of issues,\u201d said Clarissa Goodlett, the Center\u2019s program and public communications officer.<\/p>\n<p>Goodlett said the Center chose to host this particular event as part of its ongoing exploration of the idea of diaspora and where people of African descent live today.<\/p>\n<p>Christina Sue, assistant professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder and one of the authors speaking at the event, said she is looking forward to engaging in conversation with Laura Lewis, the other author that will be present.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope we can both learn from each other, and I hope it will further our understanding of Mexico,\u201d Sue said.<\/p>\n<p>Sue said her book, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/?p=26177\" target=\"_blank\">Land of the Cosmic Race: Race Mixture, Racism, and Blackness in Mexico<\/a>,\u201d discusses the ideas or race, racism and race mixing in modern day Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>Sue said the book, which was inspired by what Sue observed doing field research in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Veracruz\" target=\"_blank\">Veracruz, Mexico<\/a>, focuses on the difference between the Mexican government\u2019s attitude towards the issue of race versus the reality faced by mixed race people living in Mexico&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Read the entire article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailytarheel.com\/blog\/canvas\/2013\/04\/authors-photographer-discuss-race-in-mexico\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Notions of race in modern-day Mexico addressed in lecture, exhibit The Daily Tar Heel 2013-04-03 Tat&#8217;yana Berdan The Daily Tar Heel is the student newspaper at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
