He had an Italian father and a black mother, but he\u2019s always classified as black. You see, American racial classification is totally cultural, and it\u2019s based on the unfortunate and sad legacy of racial distinction based on this ridiculous metaphor, the purity of blood.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re identifiable as having black ancestry because we can see it. I mean, who&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tiger_Woods\" target=\"_blank\">Tiger Wood<\/a>, who\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colin_Powell\" target=\"_blank\">Colin Powell<\/a>? Colin Powell is as Irish as he is African, but we don\u2019t classify him as that.<\/p>\n<p>No, we have a really screwed up classification. To think it\u2019s biological is just plain wrong. It\u2019s based, flat-out, on the legacy of racism and the metaphor of the purity of the blood.
