he 8-year-old girl who had difficulty breathing had been misdiagnosed for a long time, but then a technician looked at her X-ray and asked incredulously why she had not been treated for cystic fibrosis.<\/p>\n

The reason was because she was black, and cystic fibrosis was thought to be a white people\u2019s disease. The technician had never met the girl when he asked his question.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s bad medicine to look at someone\u2019s race and say you should get this test or that test, because you may be completely wrong,\u201d said distinguished author and educator Dorothy Roberts<\/a>.<\/p>\n

To Roberts, who penned \u201cFatal Invention: How Science, Politics and Big Business Re-Create Race in the 21st Century<\/a>,\u201d this is just one example of a distorted view of science and race playing out today.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no such thing as a white disease or a black disease or an Asian disease,\u201d Roberts said during a provocative talk Sunday at Skokie\u2019s Ethical Humanist Society of Chicago. \u201cThat doesn\u2019t make sense, because there\u2019s no gene that belongs to a particular race that doesn\u2019t belong to other races.\u201d<\/p>\n

She argues that the tie between biology and race is a myth that has been resurrected again, this time with the help of a false reliance on modern-day science…<\/p>\n

…Some of the same theories from the era of eugenics, she said, are being resuscitated in 21st century science.<\/p>\n

Roberts isn\u2019t saying, though that we\u2019re all identical \u2013 one reason she isn\u2019t keen on President Clinton\u2019s famous declaration about the Human Genome Project<\/a> that all human beings, regardless of race, are more than 99 percent the same.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt makes it sound like we\u2019re all alike, and you can see that everyone isn\u2019t alike,\u201d she said. \u201cThere\u2019s lots of genetic variation in the human species, but it\u2019s not grouped into races.\u201d<\/strong>…<\/p>\n
