{"id":30613,"date":"2013-04-24T01:33:25","date_gmt":"2013-04-24T01:33:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mixedracestudies.org\/wordpress\/?p=30613"},"modified":"2015-07-25T03:02:31","modified_gmt":"2015-07-25T03:02:31","slug":"researching-ethnicity-identity-and-mixed-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mixedracestudies.org\/wp\/?p=30613","title":{"rendered":"Researching ethnicity, identity and &#8216;mixed-race&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/britishlibrary.typepad.co.uk\/socialscience\/2012\/11\/researching-ethnicity-identity-and-mixed-race.html\" target=\"_blank\">Researching ethnicity, identity and &#8216;mixed-race&#8217;<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/britishlibrary.typepad.co.uk\/socialscience\/\" target=\"_blank\">Social Science Research: Discussing Methods and Resources<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bl.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">The British Library<\/a><br \/>\n2012-11-19<\/p>\n<p><em>This post discusses our latest Myths and Realities event on ethnicity, identity and &#8216;mixed-race&#8217; and points readers in the direction of some relevant British Library collections.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On the evening of 13 November we hosted our latest <a title=\"Myths and Realities series\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bl.uk\/reshelp\/bldept\/socsci\/events\/myths\/realities.html\" target=\"_blank\">Myths and Realities<\/a> event (in partnership with the <a title=\"Academy of Social Science\" href=\"http:\/\/www.acss.org.uk\/favicon.ico\" target=\"_blank\">Academy of Social Science<\/a>) on &#8216;Our ethnicity and identity &#8211; what does it all mean?&#8217; Speakers <a title=\"Professor Miri Song\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/sspssr\/staff\/academic\/s\/song-miri.html\" target=\"_blank\">Professor Miri Song<\/a> and <a title=\"Professor Ann Phoenix\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ioe.ac.uk\/staff\/tcru_43.html\" target=\"_blank\">Professor Ann Phoenix<\/a> spoke about how we think about our ethnic identity, and how the meanings we attach to this identity can change across time, space and social context. The event was chaired by Rania Hafez of <a title=\"Muslim Women in Education\" href=\"http:\/\/muslimwomenineducation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Muslim Women in Education<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ann Phoenix&#8217;s talk entitled &#8216;Why are \u2018race\u2019 and ethnicity crucial to identities and social lives, but not central?&#8217; explored how debates about multiculturalism have produced contradictory ways of thinking about &#8216;race&#8217;, ethnicity and identities. Miri Song&#8217;s title was &#8216;Does the growth of \u2018mixed race\u2019 people signal the declining significance of \u2018race\u2019?&#8217;.
